this seems to happen to me a lot... i'll sit for hours at a cash game and get dealt Q J constantly... or 10 8 or some other subpar hand... and psychologically i'll start to believe it'll hit and so i'll start calling with it even in bad spots. =(
a general question to everyone... how do you deal with the psychology of picking hands in these types of situations? or it could be simply having to fold every hand for an hour or more because all you're getting dealt is garbage. |

It sucks to have to keep folding. So much depends on other details...is it a tournament? Is it a cash game? Is the table Loose? Tight? Passive? Aggressive?
If it's an AHL tournament, I probably widen my starting hand range. If it's cash game or a tournament with some significant $$$ on the line, hopefully I'm disciplined enough to lay marginal hands down. |

For what it's worth, I found this starting hand system to be pretty helpful and very easy to learn...
2-9 = Face Value
10 = 11 points
J = 12 points
Q = 13 points
K = 14 points
A = 16 points
Pairs - Add 10
Suited - Add 4
Connected - Add 3
1 Gap - Add 2
2 Gap - Add 1
Late position - Add 3
Middle position - Add 1
Now add your 2 starting cards together and apply the adders to the total.
Hand values 31 - 33 = call blinds (you might want to see a cheap flop)
Hand values 34 - 36 = call bets (you definitely want to see a flop)
Hand values 37+ = RAISE / re-RAISE (get your money in there!)
According to the article I read, this system should produce winnings 70% of the time (based on an official study of 1 million hands, tested at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas)
Personally, this system is a bit tight for my style and there is much more to consider than just numbers and values, but it is pretty solid play... especially for the beginner who doesn't really know exactly what is going on.
